5 Signs Your Watch Needs a Professional Repair

Is your watch running slow, fogging up, or feeling stiff? These 5 warning signs mean it's time for professional watch repair in Willis, TX.

A quality watch — whether a Seiko, Bulova, or any other trusted brand — is built to last. But like any precision instrument, it needs attention when something goes wrong. Ignoring early warning signs usually turns a small fix into an expensive repair.

Here are five signs to watch for.

1. The Crown Is Stiff, Loose, or Gritty

The crown (the knob used to set the time) should pull out smoothly and turn without resistance. Stiffness or looseness usually means the winding stem is damaged or the seals have degraded — which can allow moisture inside the case and damage the movement entirely.

2. Moisture or Fogging Under the Crystal

Condensation or a foggy film inside the crystal means moisture has already entered the case. Even “water resistant” watches lose their seal as gaskets age. Moisture corrodes the movement quickly — bring it in as soon as you notice it.

3. The Watch Is Running Noticeably Fast or Slow

A small rate deviation is normal. But if your watch is gaining or losing several minutes a day, something is off. Common causes: a magnetized movement (from proximity to phones or laptops), worn mainspring, dried lubricants, or a shock that displaced internal parts.

4. A Cracked or Scratched Crystal

A damaged crystal isn’t just cosmetic — it leaves the movement exposed to dust and moisture. A hairline crack grows quickly. Crystal replacements are usually straightforward and affordable, so don’t delay.

5. It Stops Unexpectedly

If your quartz watch stops and a new battery doesn’t fix it, or if your automatic watch keeps stopping despite regular wear, there’s likely a deeper issue — dirty contacts, a damaged oscillator, or movement problems that need professional diagnosis.

Most manufacturers recommend a full movement service every 3–5 years regardless of symptoms.
