Understand the 4 Cs
Diamonds are graded on four universal standards: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat.
Cut is the most important. A well-cut diamond reflects light brilliantly, making it appear larger and more alive. Even a smaller stone with an excellent cut will outshine a larger stone with a poor one.
Color is graded D (colorless) to Z (visibly yellow). Grades G–I offer a near-colorless look at a much better value than the top tier.
Clarity measures internal flaws. For most buyers, VS2 or SI1 grades are “eye-clean” — you won’t see the inclusions without magnification. Paying for perfect clarity is usually unnecessary.
Carat is the weight of the stone, not its size. A well-cut 0.9-carat diamond often looks larger than a poorly cut 1.0-carat.
