What to Expect When Designing Custom Jewelry

Thinking about a one-of-a-kind piece? Here's exactly what the custom jewelry design process looks like — from your first conversation to wearing the finished piece.

Custom jewelry sounds intimidating — people assume it’s only for the ultra-wealthy or that the process is too complicated to navigate. The reality is it’s more accessible and more rewarding than most people expect.

At Edward Jewels & Watches in Willis, TX, we guide customers through custom design every week. Here’s what the process actually looks like.

Step 1: The Consultation

Everything starts with a conversation. You’ll sit down with our team and talk through what you have in mind — or don’t have in mind yet. Many clients come in with a feeling rather than a specific design: “vintage,” “modern and simple,” or “I want to use my grandmother’s stones.”

Bring any inspiration you have — photos, Pinterest boards, magazine clippings. We’ll discuss metal type, stone preferences, and your budget. There’s no pressure and no obligation at this stage.

Step 2: Sketches and Rendering

Once we understand your vision, we create design sketches or a CAD rendering — a digital 3D model of the piece before a single gram of metal is cast. You can see proportions, settings, and shapes come to life, then give us feedback.

Most clients go through one to three revision rounds before they’re fully satisfied. Take your time here. Changes are easy now; they’re not after the piece is made.

Step 3: Material Selection

With the design approved, we select the materials. If you’re supplying stones from an heirloom piece, we’ll evaluate them for quality and compatibility. If we’re sourcing stones, we’ll walk you through options at different price points.

Step 4: Fabrication

The piece is made. Depending on complexity, fabrication takes two to four weeks. Techniques include casting, hand-fabrication, or a combination. We’ll reach out if any decisions come up along the way.

Step 5: Final Fitting

You come in, we make any last adjustments — sizing, polishing — and the piece is yours.

Custom jewelry from Edward Jewels & Watches is built to last a lifetime. Whether you have a detailed vision or just a starting point, we’ll help you create something worth keeping forever.
